Learning Disability
A generic term that refers to a heterogeneous group of disorders manifested by
significant difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading,
writing, reasoning, or mathematical abilities. These disorders occur in persons
of average to very superior intelligence and are presumed to be due to central
nervous system dysfunction. Even though a learning disability may exist
concomitantly with other handicapping condition (e.g., sensory impairment) or
environmental influences (e.g., cultural/language differences) it is not the direct
result of those conditions or influences.

Students must have verification of a learning disability supported by diagnostic
test results completed within the previous three years. All verifications will be
reviewed by a Learning Disability Specialist. A learning disability may be
verified in two ways. First, the student may submit the results of an assessment
completed within the preceding three years. This assessment may be from any
authorized outside source (e.g., psychologist, medical doctor, educational
psychologist); all information will reviewed by the Learning Disability Specialist.
In addition, students registered at CSUSB may request an assessment directly
from the Learning Disability Specialists. The Learning Disability Specialist will
make the final determination as to whether an assessment is warranted. In order
to be certified as "learning disabled", the student must meet the official criteria
as specified by the CSU Chancellor's Office.
