The California State University has established the following categories of disabilities for reporting purposes:

Bullet Image Visual Limitation Blindness or partial sight to the degree that it impedes the educational process and necessitates procurement of supportive services or programs.
Bullet Image Communication Disability
Limitation in the processes of speech and/or hearing which impedes the educational process and necessitates the procurement of supportive services or programs. Students in this category shall not require interpreting services.
Bullet Image Deaf and Hearing Impaired
Limitation in the process of hearing which impedes the educational process and necessitates the procurement of supportive services or programs. Students in this category shall require oral or sign language interpreters.
Bullet Image Mobility Limitation
Limitation in locomotion or motor functions which indicates a need for supportive services or programs. Included in this category would be persons who have asthma, cardiovascular problems, or who do not have motor functions necessary to lift or carry items normally used in an academic setting (i.e., books and supplies).
Bullet Image Learning Disability
A generic term that refers to a heterogeneous group of disorders manifested by significant difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning, or mathematical abilities. These disorders occur in persons of average to very superior intelligence and are presumed to be due to central nervous system dysfunction. Even though a learning disability may exist concomitantly with other handicapping condition (e.g., sensory impairment) or environmental influences (e.g., cultural/language differences) it is not the direct result of those conditions or influences.

Students must have verification of a learning disability supported by diagnostic test results completed within the previous three years. All verifications will be reviewed by a Learning Disability Specialist. A learning disability may be verified in two ways. First, the student may submit the results of an assessment completed within the preceding three years. This assessment may be from any authorized outside source (e.g., psychologist, medical doctor, educational psychologist); all information will reviewed by the Learning Disability Specialist.

In addition, students registered at CSUSB may request an assessment directly from the Learning Disability Specialists. The Learning Disability Specialist will make the final determination as to whether an assessment is warranted. In order to be certified as "learning disabled", the student must meet the official criteria as specified by the CSU Chancellor's Office.

Bullet Image Other Functional Limitations
Any other dysfunction of a body part or process which necessitates the use of supportive services or programs, and which does not fall within the categories listed above.
