Project UPBEAT

Have you ever wondered if students in middle school think about college at such an early age? Fortunately, here at Cal State San Bernardino, we have a program designed for seventh and eighth graders to help them make the important decision to attend college and prepare them for life after high school. This program is known as Project UPBEAT, University Preparation By Early Academic Training.

The program began in 1984 and has evolved to accommodate the needs of the students around the Inland Empire. Project UPBEAT is designed to motivate and enhance students' awareness about pursuing a post-secondary education. Its objective is to intervene in the 7th and 8th grade level with an educational, college oriented program aimed at assisting in setting academic goals and continue their education beyond high school. Project UPBEAT participants have been identified as having the potential to successfully complete a college preparatory program in high school so that they can enter a college or university.

    College: Making It Happen

This is an event offered in English and Spanish designed to educate the community and parents of middle school students on the four educational systems of higher education in California: the Community College, the Cal State University, the University of California, and the Private system. The goal of this event is for parents to be able to academically and financially plan for their child's higher education by making them aware of all options available. This will enable parents to serve as an educational guide for their child. This annual event is held during the month of February, which was designated as College Awareness Month. This event is open to parents and students participating in
Project UPBEAT and the University Awareness Program as well as to the general public. This program is also implemented at the Coachella Valley Center.

CSUSB'S OVERNIGHT STAY PROGRAM: A NIGHT WITH THE PACK

A Night With the Pack is a program created specifically to give high school seniors a taste of what a typical day for a college student is like. All participants are paired up with a host and housed on campus in the Residence Halls and the new University Apartments of Serrano Village. Participants arrive on a Sunday and depart the following Monday afternoon. During their stay, participants will get to know college students and other high school seniors, as well as attend traditional on-campus events, a workshop, and college classes with their host. Participants will familiarize themselves with university staff, professors and meet with a counselor. This is a great program for high school seniors who would like to further explore CSUSB as the campus of their choice. By the end of the program, participants will have taken an important step at planning their future and have a head start on other college freshmen!
